Finding a painter

Whether you are adding the finishing touches to a building project or if you just think it’s time for a change, taking the time to find a painter to suit you can be drawn out. Plentific can speed things up for you, providing a bespoke list of the best painters in your local area, along with reviews from their previous clientele.

What do you need to know about hiring a painter?

Before you bring a painter in, have as good an idea as possible of the job they will be doing. Measure the space and choose your materials carefully or, if possible, do some of the prep work yourself, such as clearing a room of furniture. It also pays to be open to suggestions regarding colour, lighting and decor. When you have your ideas prepared, invite your choices to assess the job themselves. This is especially important for intricate projects such as murals, as you may need to bring in a specialist.

If you have been working with other tradespeople or an architect it is likely that they will have a painter that they have worked with in the past to recommend to you. Even so, be sure to check the experience and qualifications of your choices. Most will have started with on the job training, though some will have completed apprenticeship schemes, college courses, a CITB On-Site Assessment Workshop or an Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA). A good sign of professionalism and skill is membership in an organisation like the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) or the British Decorators’ Association (BDA). You can also request that a potential choice provides reviews and references from previous jobs, or this information may be displayed on their websites.

After assessing the job your choices should be able to provide a flat, hourly or daily rate for their services. Depending on the size of the job they may need to bring in multiple tradespeople and additional materials, so be sure to ask if this will add to the cost.

The ideal choice will have insurance policies and guarantees in place to cover accidental damage or potential injury. This is crucial since some painters will be doing their jobs on ladders or scaffolding, or may be working with dangerous fumes. They should also have a policy in place in the event that you are unsatisfied with their finished work.

An experienced professional should be able to provide all of this information. If they cannot, or are hesitant to, it would be wise to continue your search.

What does a painter do?

A painter is a tradesperson qualified to paint buildings inside and out, including walls, ceilings and architraves. Hiring a painter is the best solution if you want a job done quickly or if you want it done to a high standard. Some will have specialised experience with specialist types of paints and patterns, and many will have basic skills that compliment their roles such as deck sealing, filling in cracks and preparing or mixing paint. They should be able to work with different surfaces including plaster, metal and wood.

How much does it cost to hire a painter?

This depends on the size of the job and the materials involved. Larger projects may require multiple painters, and exterior painting may cost more. You should decide before making your final decision who will be providing the materials for the job, as this can have a big impact on price. You can also save money if you are able to remove old paint or wallpaper yourself, or if you are happy to do the tidying up once the work is completed. Also be sure to ask if the price offered to you includes VAT. Do not be afraid to ask for a price breakdown.
